The Veras: Paper Cup Telephones/ If You Ain’t Got Love
Written by Jason DisleyPaper Cup Telephones is a rolling nostalgia-laden tune that is instantly gratifying with its uplifting vibe that has a feel that it is once again a tune that needs to be heard live in a suitable pub or club.
You can imagine the euphoric crowd really digging it, and beatific smiles being everywhere. The fact the band can craft anthemic crowd-pleasing tunes squeezed into just under three and a half minutes show they are masters at creating catchy songs suited to the still fabulously popular seven-inch single. These songs are obviously made to be heard and seeing them preserved in the vinyl format is gratifying for any true music lover.
Spinout Nuggets the label run by Lee Grimshaw knows true quality and has championed some great music in recent years, and this record is no exception. Re-pressed on a fine shade of orange Vinyl it oozes a bright and cheerful outlook at a time that has recently been devoid of the usual frivolity that abounded in the days of total freedom. Luckily, as things have opened up a bit more recently, and now The Veras are gigging again, they can spread their version of hopeful happy times and make their following smile again.
Side 2 has a punkier vibe. If You Ain’t Got Love takes off like a rocket and grabs you in a boisterous fist, and it doesn’t let go until the end. Throughout, the grip, bounces hard with an infectious rhythm that makes the listener bounce like a teenager. Again, a masterclass in reverie that is as relevant to the halcyon days of youth in the mid to late twentieth century, as to those drawn to proper music that wants a vibe that makes sense.
Dan Taylor’s drumming is immense on this track and drives the pace with frenetic energy. The Vera’s are also known as The Small Faces tribute band The Small Fakers. They have honed their craft over the years and have travelled extensively. The fact that after such a long time doing the “covers” thing, they have the confidence to create their own original tunes is a great boon. This is what many people want. Originality that really shows what you are made of. The Vera’s know all the ingredients to serve up a delicious sense of happiness and I defy anyone not to be a fan. Check them out at a gig, buy their records, t shirts and spread the word. You won’t be disappointed if you are sussed enough.
