A Mad Affair EP Chris Free
Written by Jason DisleyI have been aware of Chris Free for quite some time, a man who is a gifted songwriter and also the main man behind Mr Free Shirts and other enterprises.
He is a man with drive, passion, and a voracious appetite for new adventures. He is also part of the wonderful group The Sound Of Pop Art. He, Sara Onyett, and an array of musicians including guest appearances Gabriela Giacoman of French Boutik, and the Tiny Flaws keyboard player Toby Kinder, amongst others, have produced some wonderful songs over the years. In fact, 2018's TSOPA's album The Beat The Beautiful And The Loaded was without a doubt my favourite album of that summer of 2018, its gorgeous vibe always raising a smile. In fact, as soon as subsequent summers arrived, despite pandemics and disaster - I will return to this album. So, naturally when I heard of
Chris Free's first-ever solo release - which is produced by Andy Lewis (Paul Weller, Fay Hallam, The Catenary Wires, etc) no less, with Andy contributing on beats, bass, and keys. I was intrigued.
The "A Mad Affair" EP provides, as stated on The Sninout Nuggets site, "four Summer-Autumn vibes, setting up a fine, quintessential English scene, pushing across the horizon of blue sky and the finest greenery all the way up to the toes."
This I have to agree with. Chris has crafted what I have come to expect. Quality songs that evoke so much.
Spinout Nuggets continues, ‘Rosemary Jane’ takes us down to the meadows on a psyche-pop, sun kissed afternoon. ‘What’s It Like’ serves up some stomping 'back in the garage' life affirming, thirst quenching soul. ‘A 'Mad Affair’ think of John Barry meeting Syd Barrett on a Norfolk Broads getaway. ‘Refections’ imagines the opening scene of a typical 60’s English film, possibly driving along the mountains in a classic convertible."
It is an EP that I highly recommend - it's quintessentially English pop and crafted by a man who is suitably mad enough to share his passion with those who have a discerning ear.
You can purchase Chris Free's A Mad Affair EP from Spinout Nuggets or Bandcamp.
