Between 10th November to 12th December 1983, BBC 1 ran a six part series, Johnny Jarvis.  A story of two friends spanning over a six year period, starting in 1977 and ending in the then present, 1983.  The series was set in Hackney and its surrounding boroughs, all shot on location with no studio scenes. Written by author, screenwriter and playwright Nigel Williams (20th January 1948) an Oxford graduate and talented writer who creates engaging and intriguing plots, with an emphasis on character study and development. Despite stemming from a public school education, much of Williams’ early work displays empathy for the working class, in particular teenagers.

Some People, made in 1962 and released in April 1963 directed by Clive Donner (What's New Pussycat, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, The Caretaker) is an early British film on Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Originally made as a film to get young adults to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, as all profits went to the scheme, it is far from a propaganda film as it can act as a visual case study of the early days of British pop culture.

Hinton who was a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a pupil at an Art Deco school, Will Rogers High School, in the early sixties. It was here that Hinton observed and possibly participated in the gang counter culture The Greasers.

Goodbye Gemini – The Death Of Hippy

goodbye gemini matteo sedazzari zani 1.j

In the mid sixties, the world saw the birth of hippies. A counter culture, which questioned so much about society, and was not afraid to suggest an alternative lifestyle to the norm. A spectacular movement, with colourful clothes, magnificent music in the guise of The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and many more, with mind-bending drugs and free love. An ethos that went way beyond being a bored teenager, and got the whole world thinking.

Those who have seen the film Bronco Bullfrog will not have forgotten it. Made in 1969, it features real East End kids playing East End Kids and doing the sort of thing East End Kids of the time got up to. We are shown real stuff like the film’s star Del, out to impress on a first date, taking his girlfriend ‘up west’ on his new motorcycle. He decides that the West End cinema is a bit too pricey so instead takes her for a slap meal to a fancy restaurant – a Wimpy’s.

Babylon Revisited

Released nearly thirty years ago, Babylon stands up today as a well crafted, convincingly acted, hard hitting piece of realistic drama.

It’s powerful, resonant ending is up there with the classic Jimmy Cagney‘s “Made It Make top of the world” finale in White Heat. But Babylon is not available in any British Video store. It has been not been shown on British TV, neither terrestrial or satellite, for many years.  What is the meaning of this outrage?
