CBGB (actually the full name is ‘CBGB and OMFUG’ that stands for Country, Blue Grass and Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers – where Gormandizers according to Hilly Kristal means ‘a voracious eater of music’) was a music club situated at 315 Bowery at Bleecker Street of Manhattan, New York. The club was founded in 1973 by Hilly Kristal.

The club started with its namesake musical styles but later on became a medium of promoting American punk music. Many punk-influenced bands such as Ramones, The Dead Boys, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Dictators, Mink Deville, The Fleshtones and the like were a part of it. The club closed down in October 2006 and the final concert was performed by Patti Smith.

Some Punk Bands

Here is a brief history of some of the most famous punk bands of America:

Blondie: Blondie was the pop icons of New York’s famous punk music in the late 70’s. Their lyrics were always typically ‘tongue in cheek’. They were really stylish in that 70’s era with coolest hair and the trendiest clothes. The band was originally formed in 1974 by art student and guitarist Chris Stein and vocalist and songwriter Deborah Harry who was once Max’s Kansas City waitress. Later on in 1975, keyboard player Jimmy Destri and drummer Clem Burke joined them. They started playing at CBGB in New York, Max’s Kansas City and Mothers before recording their first album in 1976. They continued with some famous albums such as Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, Eat to the Beat, Autoamerican, The Best of Blondie, The Hunter, and No Exit.

Ramones: Ramones, a group from Forest Hills, New York was regarded as the first true punk-rock group. The band members included Jeffery Hyman, John Cummings, Douglas Colvin, Richie Stern and drummer Thomas Erdelyi. They started using stage names Joey Ramone (Jeffery), Johnny Ramone (John), Dee Dee Ramone (Colvin) and Tommy Ramone (Thomas). They started their musical career at the CBGB Club and they played their first show at the Performance Studio in 1974. Their debut album Ramones was produced at a very low budget of around $6400 in 1976. Some of the famous albums of the group are Leave Home, Road To Ruin, their famous live album It’s Alive (recorded at Rainbow Theatre, London), End of the Century, Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle, Too Tough to Die, Animal Boy, Halfway to Sanity, Brain Drain, Acid Eaters, Adios Amigos, and more.

The Talking Heads: The Talking Heads started with three members Byrne, Frantz and Weymouth in 1974. At that time they all were recent art school graduates. They were an integral part of the 70’s American punk scene, and also played at CBGB. Though they played with the famous punk group Ramones, their music was more experimental. Their first album was released in 1977. To add some unique feature to their music, they incorporated African rhythms in their music. Some of their famous hits include Talking Heads 77, More Songs About Buildings And Food, Fear of Music, Remain in Light, Speaking in Tongues, Stop Making Sense, Little Creatures, True Stories, Naked, Once in a Lifetime and the like.
