When talking about the most popular sports activities in the world, we must mention horse racing. It is one of the most loved such activities, especially in the English-speaking countries and in Asia.

Horse racing is one of the oldest and widespread sports in history, being so much popular in the ancient world. Nowadays, this sport has become almost an industry in some countries.

The main focus is on the horses, as would anyone expect. And an important role is played by the jockeys as well. But there are also the spectators at the races (which in some cases can exceed 100,000), the fans outside the venues, and the ones who bet on the races.

In fact, online racing betting is becoming increasingly attractive, not only in some countries where the horse racing is so popular – like the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, France, Australia, or the Emirates –, but also in many other parts of the world. For example, you can take advantage of the odds at Unibet for the horse racing events which take place in Australia, and there are plenty of events to choose from. Horse racing in this country has one of the biggest shares of race betting in the world, along with the United Kingdom and Japan.

Speaking of Australia, the most popular single event of horse racing in this country is the Melbourne Cup, which is known as “the race that stops the nation”. This event takes place on the first Tuesday of November, starting at 3 PM local time.

The Melbourne Cup is a 3200-meter (or two miles) race in which are competing for three-year-olds and over. It takes place at the Victoria Racing Club and is part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. This is deemed as the richest “two-mile” handicap race in the world.

The first race was held here in 1861, and the recorder holder is the Kingston Rule horse, with an impressive 3:16.3 in 1990 – that is a staggering average speed of over 58 km/h.

In terms of popularity, the race is so famous that it is a public holiday in Victoria. Nevertheless, the cup has a lot of fans not only in Australia but also in other countries, as the events attract the attention of the media and the community.

Here are the main favorites at this year’s Melbourne Cup:

Surprise Baby (8/1)

Two of the most anticipated horses to take part in the race have the same odds of winning it. One is Surprise Baby, 6 years old born in New Zealand, which has made almost one million dollars so far.

Russian Camelot (8/1)

The other one is Russian Camelot. This three and a half years old was bred in Ireland and races in Australia. He has won over 450,000 dollars so far, and also a Group One race – the South Australian Derby this year.

Tiger Moth (12/1)

Coming from Ireland, this stallion is another three and a half years old, which is the third overall favorite. With over 350,000 dollars won so far, Tiger Moth finished first this year at Leopardstown races in Dublin, in June and September.

Master of Wine (14/1)

Master of Wine is a five and a half years old gelding. He comes from Germany, and his greatest success was in Australia. Almost the entire 600,000 dollars won so far were in Australian races.

Search for A Song (14/1)

This four and a half years old from Ireland has the best of her performances on long distances. Her racehorse debut was in 2019, finishing fourth in the Irish Oaks. Then it won the Galtres Stakes and the Irish St Leger.
