As much as many of us enjoy periods as nomads, wandering the world for new experiences, there is always a time when we need to settle down. Whether for a year or two, or much longer, putting down roots is usually a big part of building long-term relationships and creating a steady life.

There's a 'first world problem' from which we suffer when it comes to this idea: an abundance of choice. It used to be the case that people would generally grow, live, and die mere miles from where they were born. Today, however, moving to a different city or even country is a very real opportunity about which many of us dream.

That said, there are elements of this dream which are more based in fantasy than reality. Instead, we need to properly balance the fantastic elements with the real, to be sure we look before we leap.

Chase What Inspires You

They say success is 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration, but the latter part - however small - is not something which should be overlooked. Choosing a home means finding a place to think, a safe spot to give order to all of your dreams and hopes.

For some people this environment will be more of a container, for others, it will help give your thoughts form. Because of this, your personality comes first. What’s important is not what others think of you, and not what you think others want, but rather what allows you to best flourish today and in the future.

With this in mind, it’s important to understand the reality of what you crave, rather than the fantasy. Too often we’ve seen friends move overseas with a dream of living in a new country, only to find that the dream was the romanticisation of a place which never truly existed.

Spend a few months or weeks in or around a place where you want to live first before moving to take the big steps to completely change your life.

The Realest of Real

Once you finally have a location picked, you're going to have to find the right financial solution for payment. Getting a mortgage is the last big step to make a dream a reality, but you need to remember that not all mortgage providers are created equal. In fact, it's not even close.

To help here, there are services available like Trussle which can help a wide range of customers to identify the best mortgage lenders. Even if you’re self-employed or have bad credit, there are solutions available among the dozens of lenders and thousands of deals.

Sometimes it might not be worth crippling yourself for a bad deal, so waiting for a new opportunity can be the best idea.

Don’t Rush

Finding the right opportunity isn’t just a matter of taking into account who you are now. The best homes are those which can take into account your future growth as a person. Sometimes you might want a family, other times a place for your pets, or space for a hobby.

By rushing excitedly into the process of buying a home we can forget to take important factors into account, and this is something which we want to avoid at all cost. Take your time, truly consider what you want in your future, not just your present, and your next home will be all the better for it.
