Five Great Movies to Enjoy with Your Soulmate
Written by Chris BaxterEverybody loves a good old romantic movie night with their soulmate. However, it can often be hard to find something to watch, and we all know that it’s difficult to agree on a movie to enjoy with your other half.
As the festive season approaches, we’ve assembled this list of five great movies to enjoy with your soulmate. And, fellas, if you fancy marking the occasion a little more, try and find the perfect gift for her – it will make her and your evening ten times better!
5 – Bridget Jones’s Diary
Kicking off our list is Bridget Jones’s Diary, a classic Christmas rom-com. Starring Renee Zellweger as the comical, hopeless romantic Bridget Jones alongside the classy Hugh Grant and timeless Colin Firth, we follow Bridget as she attempts to navigate the path of love, through the writings in her diary.
But being a rom-com, it doesn’t go quite to plan. Bridget’s imperfections, combined with her eccentric nature and a New Years Resolution that she simply must fulfill, lead to a series of mishaps that will leave harshest rom-com critics in stitches. An excellent introduction to the genre for the boyfriend or husband who isn’t particularly enticed by the prospect of a Christmas rom-com!
4 – The Notebook
The Notebook opens with an elderly patient named Duke reading out of a notebook to a fellow resident of the nursing home that they are living in. Duke’s story, which plays out over the next hour and a half, is one that will have the tears flowing. Set in 1940s South Carolina, two soulmates are torn apart by disapproving parents and the impending US involvement in World War Two. However, when protagonist Noah (played by Ryan Gosling) returns from the war, his romance with Allie (Rachel McAdams) appears to be far from over…
Because who doesn’t love a good tear-jerker?
3 – Titanic
Metaphorically, Titanic may not have particularly positive connotations when placed in the context of a loving relationship. After all, we all know the fate of the infamous ocean liner. However, Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet’s portrayal of the fictional, tragic love story onboard the ship that never reached New York is simply a romantic must-watch – one that will most definitely pull on the heartstrings.
A little lengthy, perhaps, but Titanic is a classic that blurs the idea of class lines – expertly directed by James Cameron. Grossing over two billion dollars at the box office, the reputation of Titanic speaks for itself. Does Di Caprio go down with the ship, or will he and Winslet’s remain together throughout the ordeal?
2 – A Star is Born
A Star is Born made headlines pre-release for the casting of Lady Gaga as protagonist Ally Maine, and certainly lived up to expectations, gaining critical acclaim upon its release. Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut (an adaptation of the 1976 film of the same name) tells the story of Jackson Maine, an ex-country rock icon who’s fallen into the trap of drugs and alcohol.
Ally and Jack are united by musical talent, and Jack’s unwavering belief in her abilities. As Ally is propelled into the musical spotlight, their relationship begins to unfold in a bittersweet tale of love and loss. A must watch for a cosy Friday night in.
1 – Love Actually
Richard Curtis’ masterpiece ‘Love Actually’ is the ultimate Christmas rom-com. Telling ten intertwined stories of different aspects of love across London one Christmas, Love Actually is guaranteed to have you and your partner laughing, crying, and feeling all warm inside.
The superb ensemble cast stars Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and the late Alan Rickman, amongst others. Shot mainly across London featuring several real capital landmarks, Love Actually puts the British in a classic British rom-com. Love Actually’s expertly crafted romantic stories, that culminate in a truly perfect ending, make Love Actually our first choice on this list.
