Often, this type of horror films also tends to include one or even a few characters that are mediums or paranormal investigators who are trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. This article will be focusing on a few of those characters that use their powers to create a happy ending for those troubled by evil spirits (or so they hope)
Ed and Lorraine Warren - The Conjuring
An interesting fact about this film is that the characters of Ed and Lorraine Warren are based on real-life ghost hunters. Ed (Patrick Wilson) is a demonologist, while Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) is a clairvoyant and medium. The two characters complement each other really well, with Ed being the more approachable one and Lorraine the more reserved. Together, they try to restore peace in a house that seems to be possessed by some demonic spirit by performing an exorcism. However, in order to be allowed to do so, they need to gather evidence that the house is indeed possessed. Cameras and bells are placed around the house and an investigation into the history of the house reveals the story of a previous owner and numerous murders and suicides.
Tangina Barrons – Poltergeist
Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein), an eccentric spiritual medium, gets called in by a group of parapsychologists to help the Freeling family solve a poltergeist intrusion that led to the kidnapping of their daughter, Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourk). Clairvoyant readings are used to see images in the mind’s eye and Barrons performs a series of these to help locate Carol Anne and also see any traces of spirits and energies. The reading gives the family guidance and insight into the situation so that it can be resolved.
Because clairvoyants have the gift of turning into a person to pick up on their whereabouts, they are used in investigations of missed people. Tangina’s skills showed her that the ghosts that inhabit the house are distracted by the daughter’s life force and therefore cannot see the actual light that had come for them. She also warns them of the presence of another spirit, the ‘Beast’, who is using Carol Anne to prevent the others from crossing over.
Elise Rainier - Insidious
The Insidious franchise is subtle and very frightening at the same time, while also being quite confusing as the story is not told in chronological order. Parapsychologist Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and her assistants are called in by a family to investigate an entity that seems to have taken over their son’s body. Upon entering the boy’s room, Elise sees the demonic figure and explains to the family that their son has the ability to travel to the astral world with his mind. To contact the boy, Elise decides to perform a seance using a gas mask - it's one of the scariest scenes in the film. As this is a franchise, there is a lot more to the story than this and there is also a lot more to find out about Lin Shaye’s character.
Every supernatural horror has its team of mediums and demonologists that wants to find out who the ghosts are and how to get rid of them, making the plot more interesting. Their characters hold the knowledge to solve the unusual events that had taken place and also create some of the most horrifying scenes in the film; which is why it is worth remembering and mentioning them.
