A Brief History of the Memphis Sound

Memphis is the capital of the Mississippi Delta and during the great migration, workers poured into the city seeking work. The workforce brought their musical heritage and music was a byword in Memphis. By 1860, Beale Street had become the Mecca for black musicians and eventually the entertainment centre of the city.

A Brief History of Jukeboxes

Juke (and jook) are corruptions of the Elizabethan English ’jouk,’ meaning to dance. The term was used by slaves brought to North America from West Africa and came to mean to ’dance’ or ’act wildly’ (i.e. disorderly) after working in the fields.

Billy J Kramer is back and very soon it will be common knowledge, as he has been busy recording a comeback album, which has spawned a single To Liverpool with Love.  A native of Merseyside and now happily residing in New York, yet it seems he has never forgotten his roots, and why should he as he was at the centre of the Merseybeat in the early sixties?  Young northern teenagers inspired by American rock ‘n’ roll artists like Buddy Holly and The Crickets, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and of course Elvis,  making music.
