Top Five Bass Players

/top five bass players l

The bass is the beat, the groove and a musical line that transfixes the listener. The bass gives the song power and attitude. The bass player has to be able to listen to a guitarist strum a few bare chords, go away and add a strong substance to half-baked song.

Alex Chilton – Remembers

The death of Alex Chilton last week was upsetting, saddening and shocking. I guess I never thought Chilton would die. His influence on my life and Creation Records is inestimable. A highlight of the Creation years was reissuing Chilton's great lost album, 1970, and having him play on Teenage Fanclub's Ain't That Enough (Chilton later joined the band in 1996 for what was an iconic gig).

Ahmet Ertegun - A Legend For Real

/ahmet ertegun alan mcgee zani 1.

Ahmet Ertegun was the music industry blueprint for somebody who cares about music and artists. He was rich, and a great business guy, but from the Stones to Led Zeppelin he took chance after chance and it paid off. The people who run the music business now are bean counters. There are very few people in the higher regions of the business who are there for the music, but Ahmet Ertegun was one of them.

I met Ahmet once in 1997. He came to my office in London and tried to buy Oasis from me. He also - bizarrely - tried to buy the Teletubbies for the States from me until I directed him to the BBC. He must have been about 73 that point but the man could still smell a hit.

I loved Ahmet, he was a legend, an absolute diamond human and musical genius. He knew every genre of music back to front. The time I met him he told me so many great stories. Obviously I said, "Ahmet, you should write a book", and he replied, "Alan, it would get me killed." He lived a life and then some.

Atlantic is the blueprint for every great indie label there has ever been - even if they don't know it. Ahmet invented the first one in 1947. He'll always shine on through the music he released, and he'll be remembered by music fans with gratitude and love.

Some of the groups which most influenced punk rock have had a limited following themselves. Critically reviled at the time, hard-pressed with finances, having just a limited regional following or with a life-span too brief to move onto the worldwide stage, these records influenced my life and many others'. What are yours?

Courtney Pine –The Jazz Warrior

courtney pine tracey wilmot zani 3.jpg

It was with some reluctance that I embarked on my first Jazz experience a few years back. I admit to being virtually dragged into the venue while in the company of a fellow musician who persuaded me to open my ears to the sound of Jazz at a popular London Festival.

PEOM had a lot of good contributors like Dean Cavanagh, Ashley Heath of The Face, James Papa Demitri, Lee Green, Martin McIvor, Toni Tamborine, and photography by Grant Fleming. Around late 1994 when we were more of a music culture magazine then  an acid house fanzine, the latter issues were filled with well written articles and Paolo Hewitt Music journalist and writer was a regular contributor, and we were over the moon when he interviewed Bobby Gillespie for us. This gives you a great insight into Primal Screams front man.

Bobby Womack - Listen To The Poet

bobby womack matteo sedazzari zani 1.

There are many reasons why people wish to become musicians, creativity, money, respect, travel, and perhaps the most common is escape. Be it poverty, a mundane job or education, a sleepy suburban town, a loveless relationship, to name a few. Whilst creating their music and absconding, they meet like-minded people, who enhance their voyage into music. In addition,

Top Five Femme Fatales

barbara steele.

The femme fatale is one of the most alluring characters in a novel, comic or film. They are usually beautiful, charming and seductive. She uses her exquisiteness and deep sexual attraction to manipulate men in order to reach her goal. She flaunts, flirts and switches between seductress to damsel in distress at the drop of a hat. More than capable of changing the tyre on her car, but would rather wait by the roadside and let some man run to the rescue and do the dirty work. She looks on, powdering her nose and contemplating what other uses the hapless fool may have.

About Us

ZANI was conceived in late 2008 and the fan base gradually grew by word of mouth. Key contributors came from those of the music, film and fashion industry and the voice of ZANI grew louder. So, when in 2013 investor, contributor and fan of ZANI Alan McGee* offered his support to help restyle and relaunch the site it was inevitable that traffic would increase dramatically and continues to grow. *Alan McGee co-founder of Creation Records and new label 359 Music..
