FIFA World Cup – A League unto Itself

It could probably be said that the FIFA world cup is the league of leagues, where the club is a school, and the World Cup a university. This unique tournament, now nearly a century old, is one in which the purest skill of each country is put on display.

It seems like an implausible scenario now, but there was once a day when the sun beat down on Wembley Stadium, an England side had just rammed four past Germany, and the World Cup was on its way to Lancaster Gate. That day was July 30, 1966, a date that every true Englander knows as well as the Battle of Hastings, the declaration of World War II, or the death of Princess Diana. It represented the completion of an impossible dream, forged by many years of toil, ingenuity and fortitude.

In the Summer of 1977, Argentina’s World Cup was one year away. Argentina as hosts, were condemned to Friendly matches in preparations for their World Cup. To test themselves against worthy European Competition that they would surely be facing, the Argentine Federation invited many European nations to play vs. the national team that summer. Argentina under the control of a Junta led by General Videla was beset by political problems and terrorism. There were questions about their ability to host the event. The authorities wanted to showcase these friendlies to display to the world, their competence and willingness to host the Main Event without any problems.
