Alex Chilton – Remembers

The death of Alex Chilton last week was upsetting, saddening and shocking. I guess I never thought Chilton would die. His influence on my life and Creation Records is inestimable. A highlight of the Creation years was reissuing Chilton's great lost album, 1970, and having him play on Teenage Fanclub's Ain't That Enough (Chilton later joined the band in 1996 for what was an iconic gig).

Made in 1969, released in 1970, this film was written and directed by Basil Dearden (The Blue Lamp, Violent Playground, Victim) a seasoned and talented director, a great story teller of the screen with many of his features focusing on outsiders and people alienated by society, who began his career directing the great comic genius Will Hay. Anyone familiar with Will Hay, the British comedian of the 30’s and the 40’s, will recall that much of Hay’s comedy is him struggling in the world, whilst keeping a smile on his face.

A spectacular movement, with colourful clothes, magnificent music in the guise of The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and many more, with mind-bending drugs and free love. An ethos that went way beyond being a bored teenager, and got the whole world thinking.
